XMC IV: Clouds over the Havel is the fourth edition in the XMC workshop series, bringing the international Clouds community together for a week of focused discussion on the Large and Small Clouds (LMC and SMC) and their surrounding systems.
The Clouds offer a unique opportunity to study interacting dwarf galaxies in unprecedented detail, from their stellar populations and internal structure to their dynamical evolution and interaction with their surroundings. In recent years, large-scale surveys such as Gaia, VMC, and SDSS-V have transformed our understanding of the Clouds, providing precise astrometry, deep time-series photometry, and detailed spectroscopic maps of stellar populations and the interstellar medium. Looking ahead, ongoing and upcoming facilities—including 4MOST, MOONS, Rubin, Euclid, and Roman—promise highly multiplexed spectroscopy, deep wide-field imaging, and extensive time-domain coverage, opening new avenues for research.
Building on Potsdam's long tradition in astronomy and astrophysics, XMC IV will provide a forum for the community to discuss the latest discoveries, foster new collaborations, and shape the next decade of research on the Clouds and their environments.
The workshop will explore diverse topics, ranging from the stellar populations, formation histories, and dynamical evolution of the Clouds to the properties of their gas and dust. It will also highlight the scientific opportunities offered by current and upcoming surveys and facilities.
