Travel to Potsdam

The international airport is called BER Berlin Brandenburg. Especially from overseas there might be no direct flights, and one should check flights via e.g. Frankfurt, Munich, or London-Heathrow. BER has a train station on the lowest floor, where the regional train RB22 goes to Potsdam main station ("Potsdam Hbf") every hour. The train runs from 5:23 am, 6:23 am, ..., to 9:23 pm, 10:26 pm. Taking a taxi from the airport will take about 45 minutes and costs around €70.

Getting to the Institute

Potsdam is located southwest of Berlin. From Berlin you can reach us by car if you take the motorway A115 to the exit Potsdam-Babelsberg and follow the Nuthe-Expressway to the exit Friedrich-List-Straße. There, turn right and follow the road "Alt Nowawes“ straight uphill until the topmost location, where you see the entrance to the AIP on the right hand side. Using a GPS, enter "An der Sternwarte 7" to find the entrance to AIP's parking lots.

The Berlin-Brandenburg region transportation network provides time tables and live route information at VBB.

The Potsdam bus route 616 runs between S-Bahn stops "S Griebnitzsee" and "S Babelsberg" and stops at ‘Sternwarte’ just outside the AIP main gate. You can therefore use the bus in either direction to get to the S7 line. It is also possible to walk to the AIP campus from either Griebnitzsee or Babelsberg S-train stations, but note that sidewalks are partially non-existent or in poor condition.

Potsdam is part of the ‘Berlin ABC’ fare zone, but for travelling within Potsdam's city limits, buying a ‘Potsdam AB’ ticket is sufficient. Entire Potsdam is contained in Berlin's C-zone. A single-fare ticket remains valid when changing the form of transportation (i.e., bus, S-train, tram, regional train).

Ticket machines can typically be found at S-train stations and on-board busses and trams. Ticket machines on train stations require touching the "Verkehrsverbund" button on the screen. Payment can be normally done either with cash, credit/debit card, or even using contactless payment.

It is also possible to rent a bike at various places in the city, but note that tram tracks and cobblestone roads can make this a bit of a challenge should you not be a regular cyclist. The “Bridge of Spies” is only a stone-throw from the institute, by the way.
