SAAO telescopes’ modernisation

Among the suite of telescopes that the South African Astronomical Observatory
(SAAO) operates at Sutherland, Northern Cape, are the 1.9-m and 1.0-m
telescopes, which have been in operation since the early 70s. Both telescopes
continue to produce quality observations ranging from spectroscopy,
polarimetry and imaging. I will discuss these, looking at the SAAO efforts to make
the telescopes remotely operable or robotic, the challenges we have and their
current status.
