STELLA and the Zwicky Transient Factory
I will introduce a 2015 pilot study where Type Ia supernovae were
observed with STELLA. I will then go on to describe the potential of
such observations by robotic telescopes when combined with detection
machines like the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) in the pursuit of e.g.
sources of gravitational waves or supernova shock breakouts. ZTF belongs
to a new generation of wide-field optical surveys that, coupled with
machine learning techniques to reject false candidates, will
dramatically increase the number of transients detected each year and
open new research fields. The cosmology group of HU Berlin and DESY
Zeuthen is leading efforts in finding the progenitors of Type Ia
supernovae and the optical counterparts to the extragalactic neutrinos
detected by IceCube.
